IIHF Championships: Canada vs Slovakia -- May 4, 2012
For most of those assembled in Helsinki this Friday, by their presence their season has thus far been defined as one of failure, the participants for Team Canada for the most part the moving parts of an NHL season that either ended in the first round of the playoffs and a fast exit at that, or players have arrived from teams that didn't even make the post season.
Such is the hand that head coach Brent Sutter has before him, Sutter himself having suffered his own season of discontent, first at a playoff miss and then by dismissal by his former club the Calgary Flames.
In short, all that have made the trip have something to prove, something to aim for as the IIHF World Championships drop the puck on the start of another World tournament.
And while those that have donned the Maple Leaf clearly aren't the castoffs of a Mens league lunch time hockey scrimmage, the names that chose not to attend, do stand out, though one can't particularly find fault with many of those that took a pass.
The gruelling nature of the NHL season and in particular past injuries to the most prominent, probably made them long shots to join the European adventure anyways.
So to the battle arrive the Canadians, more than a few recognizable names, stars in their own right, cobbled together with character players, rising stars and a few that have been here before, willing and able to pull on a Canada sweater, with but one goal in mind, that of a gold medal.
Anything less for most of the assembled will be of little value, fair or not, that's the pressure that they place upon themselves, the next two weeks will tell us if this group has the right mix in place to secure that elusive colour of medal, last collected in 2007.
First up on the calendar the Slovaks, ready to take the challenge to Canada and making their path just a little bit steeper by the time Friday night rolls around

Game Three-- St. Louis at Los Angeles -- May 3, 2012
The LA Kings continue to surprise, having taken care of the Vancouver Canucks in quick order in the first round, they have thus far provided much the same to the St. Louis Blues, putting St. Louis in what is for all intents and purposes a must win situation for game three tonight.
With the Blues announcing that Jaroslave Halak is out for the rest of round two, the series it seems is going to be Brian Elliot's to win or lose. Not that he's done anything to spur on the latter, in most cases Elliot has been what has kept the Blues in the games thus far though game number 2 in this series perhaps offered up a worrisome trend of early and frequent Kings scoring.
For the Blues scoring and defensive chores the problem areas of late for coach Ken Hitchcock, something we're sure he'll find a way to address before the series is over and someone has moved on.
Word out of Los Angeles is that the Blues Alex Pietrangelo will be back in the line up for Game 3, a timely return which if Pietrangelo is healthy will help shore up the Blues defensive end which has been under attack through games one and two so far, at least providing an extra hand on deck in support of the Blues goaltender.
That being said, the Blues still need to find a way to put pucks behind the Kings' Johanthan Quick, who has been in Conn Smythe kind of form thus far in the first two rounds for the Kings, while LA has clearly been finding ways to out hustle and outscore their opponents, the fact is and remains that Quick is the key to the Kings success thus, if in doubt ask the Vancouver Canucks for some testimonials in the affirmative.

Game One
Game Three -- Philadelphia at New Jersey -- May 3, 2012
The Flyers squandered a pretty good first couple of periods by the embattled Ilya Brygalov, leaving him on his own for most of the third period, at which point the Devils took full advantage of a lethargic defence and less than overwhelming offensive play, grabbing a 4-1 victory and putting their Eastern semi final at a tie heading home to Newark.
The Flyers had a full implosion in Game 2, Bryzgalov the only one it seemed that was on his game, ironic as it is, as on this night the rest of the Flyers looked over-matched.
The Devils missing their top goal scorer Ilya Kovalchuk still found the net, with all four of their goals coming in a third period where the Flyers all but abandoned their goaltender in his own end.
Philly grabbed an early 1-0 lead, leaving many on the home side to think that yet another Flyers' victory was to be delivered, however the Devils, who rarely seem to get rattled, regrouped and took much of the play to the Flyers through periods 2 and 3, the latter finding a reward for their hard work with the four goals, all of them unanswered by a Flyers team that seemed to find all its flaws delivered in one period.
Whether that rattles them for the rest of the series remains to be seen, but considering the Flyers history in these 2012 playoffs, not taking advantage of a standout game by their goaltender, who despite the four goals against had a fairly impressive time of it in the Philly nets.
When they run the film of game two, providing Peter Laviolette feels so inclined, there will be many points to be discussed, not many of them revolving around the goaltending of Brygalov in this one.
For the Devils, building on the momentum of a win in Philly is yet another building block for a team that has been flying under the radar for much of this playoff year, probably just like the Devils like it we imagine.

Game Three-- Phoenix at Nashville, May 2, 2012.
The playoff march of the Nashville Predators has come to a sudden stop, mired in the desert in games one and two where the Phoenix Coyotes took charge of things with twin home ice victories and a 2 game to 0 lead in their Western semi final match.
Part of the problem it would seem is that some of the Predators aren't exactly on the same page as their team mates, with disciplinarian action taken on Tuesday that will see newcomers Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn both sit out game three, of internal matters that may have been providing for a distraction from the goal at hand.
It's an unusual move to sit out two players of the stature of these two, especially in a must win game three for Nashville, but credit Barry Trotz and David Poile for having the courage of their convictions, the message to the Predators that don't find distraction off the ice being that this is time to be serious about your work and the quest for the Cup.
In a series that has provided Phoenix with all the momentum, it may very well be a desperation move to try and regain that sense of team work that Predators were known for prior to the arrival of Radulov and Kostitsyn.
Should the Preds win and scramble back into this series, the question will be should the Predators even accept the two back into the fold, those that worked hard through the season and were pushed aside as the post season arrived may yet get a chance to shine.
Hockey is legendary for second chances, one wonders if the two Predators in the doghouse will get theirs or if their time in the playoffs and indeed with the Predators may soon be at an end.

Game Three-- New York at Washington -- May 2, 2012
Dale Hunter's ice time allocations are still the talk of the NHL, in particular the rest provided to Alexander Ovechkin, who played less than full period of play in Game Two and yet still came out of it all the hero with his game winning goal on the power play.
So far, the strategy seems to be working, Hunter's message if not received at least heard by the Capitals most mercurial player, who while not doubt no happy about the developments, at least has managed to find the key moment to make his presence felt on the ice.
The Rangers don't have quite the same personnel issues to deal with, for the most part they have bought into John Tortorella's blue print all year long, the playoffs the final exams before the year end report card comes out, the only mark of interest, the one that says Stanley Cup champions.
The key as always for the Rangers appears to be Henrik Lundqvist, he has been the foundation of the team for the regular season and its key contributor through the playoffs thus far, forward momentum suggests he will remain the key for the Rangers to continue on in the playoffs.

Game Two-- New Jersey at Philadelphia -- May 1, 2012
An overtime victory launched the Flyers into round two and a 1 game to 0 lead over that team up the road in Jersey, a game that featured a little bit of everything for the hockey fan including two bites at a game winning apple for Danny Briere.
Denied his first attempt in Game one after a kicked puck, Briere was given a second opportunity to win one for the home side with his overtime marker from the blue line which found its way through the traffic and in behind the Devils Martin Brodeur.
The Devils 40 year goaltender once again did his best to keep the Devils around in game one, facing an onslaught of Flyers with but one mission to get to the net and cause mayhem, Brodeur was screened, bumped, run over and yapped at for most of the game and yet it was a seeing eye shot from Briere that proved to be the difference in game one.
The Devils beyond having to apply more pressure to the Flyers Ilya Bryzgalov, need to clear the lanes in their own end, making the Flyers earn their goals through hard work and the occasional hit for their troubles.
Game one most likely sets the template for this series, one which will see much of the same, most likely running through to a Game 7 showdown, which if this first one was any indication will require overtime.
