A convincing comeback over the defending champion Finns, has announced that Canada is making its return felt at the World Hockey Championships. Down two goals heading into the second period of play the Canadians stormed the Finnish end of the rink for the remainder of the game.
With goals from Alexandre Burrows, Jeff Skinner and John Tavares the Canadians turned around the two goal deficit to head into the third period all tied up with the Finnish squad.
And while the Finns had their chances in the third, Cam Ward held the fort nicely, shutting down the Finnish attack while his team mates added to the score sheet and Kari Lehtonen's goals against, the final goal, the fifth an empty net marker removed from the Lehtonen ledger with less than thirty seconds to go in the game.
It was a character win for the Canadian squad, which did not let their first period troubles carry over, for the Finns and the once boisterous crowd the final two periods were a reminder that the path to a repeat championship is not going to be an easy one.
There's little time to rest on their success for Team Canada, a challenging squad from Kazakhstan awaits them on Saturday, the Kazakhs gave the USA all it could handle on Friday, forcing Overtime before the Americans prevailed.
A warning for Canada not to take any squad lightly in this tournament, where one game can change the dynamic of the tournament quite quickly.
